What to Do After a Storm Damages a Tree
A clear, safety-first checklist for the hours after a storm, from power lines to photos to planning cleanup.

Storm damage is stressful, and the first instinct is often to start clearing branches straight away. Taking a few minutes to assess the situation safely is the better first step.
Start with safety
Keep people and pets away from fallen or hanging limbs
Treat every downed wire as live and stay well clear
Call emergency services or your utility if there is immediate danger
Avoid standing under partially broken branches
Record what happened
When it is safe, take photos from a distance. Note what the tree or limbs are touching, such as a roof, fence, car, or access route. These details help a tree-service team understand the job and can be useful for insurance.
Get the right help
Contact a tree-care company and describe the location, what fell, and whether power lines are involved. Availability after major storms depends on conditions and crew capacity, so be patient and keep the area clear until help arrives.
Safety note
Do not attempt to cut tensioned or hanging wood yourself. Storm-damaged trees can move unpredictably and are best handled by trained crews with the right equipment.
