Stump Grinding: What Homeowners Should Know
How stump grinding works, what happens to the roots, and how to prepare the area for planting or lawn.

After a tree is removed, the stump can get in the way of mowing, planting, or a new landscape plan. Grinding is a practical way to reclaim the space.
How grinding works
A grinder reduces the stump to wood chips below the surrounding grade. The depth is agreed in advance and depends on how you plan to use the area.
What about the roots?
Roots usually remain underground after grinding and break down over time. The area may settle slightly as they decompose.
Preparing for the visit
Mark irrigation lines, cables, and other buried services you know about
Clear access through gates where possible
Decide whether chips should be removed or left as mulch
Safety note
Grinders throw debris at speed. Keep children and pets indoors or well away from the work area during grinding.
